Where Do We Start? (Part 3: Freedom Forever)

January 15,  2004

Somewhere along the line, my dad, whom I admire very much, acquired a pencil that he passed down to me. This pencil has a prominent place on my desk. On it is written: “Freedom Forever” Rules for Life: 1. Fill your niche. 2. Keep right with the law. 3. Be square with your fellow men. 4. Save 10 percent. If your organization has integrity and uses good common sense #1-#3 ought to be attainable. Number 4, however is going to take some additional work. In the world of process, there is always the underlying question “What is the return on investment?”. The answer to this can only be answered if you are able to recognize that you’ve achieved a return on investment, i.e., that you have saved 10 percent. You must be able to characterize your processes and what they are currently doing for you prior to defining or improving them. Without this knowledge, you are bound by your fear of doing the wrong thing. Your fears will limit your freedom and ultimately bind you to failure.
